Stone with the Lamb of God in a Cross

9th century
Greek marble
Baptistery, Aquileia Basilica
Aquileia, Italy

This marble slab is a "liturgical furnishing" according to the label in the baptistery. In the center of the Greek cross a lamb representing Christ carries the cross on its "shoulders." The window-shaped openings in three of the quadrants each feature a set of three circles, probably representing the Trinity.

The English on the label reads, "Open-work slab and fragment, liturgical furnishing showing cross, the 'agnus Dei' [lamb of God] and radial apertures."
